"The use of IT in companies has become mature, but IT governance hasn't caught up.”
Peter Weill, Director - MIT Sloan School Center for Information Systems
This white paper examines why Australian and New Zealand CIOs continue to turn a blind eye to IT governance, putting it into the ‘too-hard’ basket, but also why, increasingly, IT governance is not an optional extra. With IT spend at over 50 percent in many larger companies (Gartner), the imperative to institute good IT governance processes that align IT with the business strategy is that much greater.
We look at how Progressive Enterprises Limited (PEL) instituted a strong governance model, and in just 18 months, improved alignment of IT with the business to deliver on their customer promise. PEL put in place an IT architecture and governance structure that would guide decision-making, and ensure transparency across the IT division. iTools Control was the tool PEL adopted to get a helicopter view across their IT projects, and to institute the internal controls needed to ensure a ‘no surprises’ policy for senior management.
