It’s been a busy run up to the end of year at iTools. This, our second newsletter, is aimed to inspire you – to get you thinking about what you could do in 2006 to work smarter, not harder. We talk with leaders in the education sector about how they manage university-wide projects, and iTools’ trainer Angela Buckley has some hot tips on how you can work smarter on iTools.

Wendy Bussen, (Former) CIO - AUT University
Ranked 15th on the biggest user of IT in New Zealand, AUT University’s IT Directorate services some 2000 staff and 26,000 students.
For nine years until her departure in November last year, CIO Wendy Bussen ran the 85-strong directorate working across three campuses, and maintaining the networks, servers and some 5,500 desktop PCs and 800 laptops.
iTools caught up with Wendy the week before she left AUT University in late 2005 to take up a new role as General Manager Corporate Services at Auckland Regional Council.

We talk to Massey’s new Projects Office Director Kevin Argyle
In August 2005, Massey University welcomed new Projects Office Director Kevin Argyle into its ranks. Prior to joining Massey, Kevin had seven years in the dairy industry, most recently at Fonterra where he helped establish Fonterra Business Services and its Programme Office.
Working in a tertiary institution like Massey, and running university-wide projects presents the same challenges as working in a big corporate - or more - thinks Kevin. Why? Because tertiary providers like Massey tend to be big – in fact, bigger than most of New Zealand’s corporate sector. Nearly a third of the top 15 users of IT in New Zealand are universities.

Is your project leaking benefits?
KPMG Global IT Project Management Survey
In October 2005, KPMG released its 2005 Global IT Project Management Survey. KPMG surveyed some 600 organisations across 22 countries and found that, in the past 12 months, a measly 2 percent consistently achieved targeted benefits, and that the majority have no way of accurately measuring the benefits achieved from projects.
KPMG’s Global Partner in Charge for Information Risk Management Egidio Zarrella concluded that “across the globe, project performance appears to be sub-standard. Organisations do not appear to be delivering on their commitments…and the required value from project investments is not being achieved”.

The Aussie connection has landed. iTools is very pleased to introduce their New South Wales Manager Gary Denhard. Gary’s twenty years experience in the international business and technology marketplace made him the man for the job of taking iTools further into the Australian market.
Gary started his career as a computing technician, rising through the ranks to management level, before switching to the other side of sales and marketing. He has a strong track record working for multinationals and technology companies in New Zealand and Australia.
