Measuring project performance: A look across the ditch

How are your IT projects performing? What is the quantifiable ROI and benefit from them?

In June 2005, iTools started talking with 200 of Australia’s market leaders, and found that while the vast majority had project tools and methodologies in place, over half – or 56 percent – were unable to demonstrate the ROI and bottom line business benefits their projects were achieving.

The survey of CIOs, CFOs, IT Managers and Information Systems Managers from 206 of Australia’s leading companies and organisations conducted by iTools Online revealed that over half can’t track return on investment and real benefits gained from large initiatives.

As one respondent said, “We don’t have the ability to analyse benefits or track the ROI gained from projects. Our priorities are firstly, visibility and being able to see what is going on across projects, and secondly, reporting on their performance in real time.”

Over 70 percent used Microsoft Project and while many felt that it satisfied their project management requirements, there was a need for greater visibility and real time reporting abilities.

iTools Online’s Managing Director Chris Bulman notes that, “the research results show senior management need greater visibility and want to know which projects are delivering – and which ones aren’t.”

Bulman also notes “In Australia, there are a lot of change programmes going on, with increased merger activity. A common issue is the stronger company can’t be seen forcing its platform on the weaker company. At the same time, management need one platform to view what is going on across the merger activity”.

“During mergers, companies are looking for an independent, single view to see the status of all the projects going on between and within the two organisations.”

“iTools Control, and its sister application, iTools Max, is ahead of its time ensuring CEOs and CIOs are equipped with real time information to measure their projects’ performance and return on investment.”

Over 80 percent of surveyed companies were second or third tier market leaders with over 500 employees.
