Making smart use of management time is critical. Tying management up with irrelevant or unimportant issues and risks is not smart.
What is smart is the ability to quickly prioritise the risks and issues that most need management attention. Being able to filter out those risks and issues making the most noise, and focus in on what are often the silent, killer issues is key.
- put rules and processes in place to escalate project-level risks and issues to the programme level, and, if necessary, to steering committee or sponsor level
- red-flag the priority issues or risks
- report priority project risks and issues to project sponsors and senior management, with requests for action
